The idea for Propagation started with a sketch I made of a face with flowers sewn through the lips. I had never tried something like this before, and wanted to see if I could pull it off. After that initial sketch I came up with the idea of blending plants with human anatomy, and adding in a little bit of blood, because WHY NOT! I didn't really have an overarching theme for this series. There was no deeper meaning or comment on society or the environment or anything like that. I simply wanted to try out this marriage between plants and flesh and see if I could pull it off.
Luckily for me, my cousin Lauren started dating Peter who was willing to be my guinea pig for this shoot. And it was a pretty fun shoot! There was a lot of fake blood, flowers shoved too far up noses, and a few candid photos that I loved so much I decided to edit and add to the final series. Lauren was right, Peter is pretty photogenic, and hopefully this is just the first of many shoots I can rope him into doing.
This series was actually one of the easiest to shoot and edit. I flew through the editing process and everything came together really smoothly. I was actually pretty shocked at how smoothly everything came together. Normally I sit in front of my MacBook, photoshop open, for hours while I stare at the screen and wonder how the hell to piece everything together. But not for this shoot! It's easily one of my favourite shoots I've ever done.
